Solar Panels
Solar panels utilize solar cells in order to convert sunlight into electricity. They fall under the field of photovoltaics (PV). This concerns itself solely with the conversion of sunlight into electricity. Alternative uses of the power from the sun include harnessing its heat.
The method through which solar panels create electricity involves semiconductors. The most popular of these is silicone. Another material choice is cadmium telluride. These semiconductors are used to make up a PV cell. The cells are assembled into a panel or module. When many of these modules are installed together, they are known as a photovoltaic array.
Solar panels are seen in many applications. They are used for small scale needs, such as calculators and watches. Larger uses include providing power for a home or building. Of course, all range of sizes exist between these two options, from charging music players to maintaining boat batteries.
